South Korean President wants a full ban on dog meat, says “Hasn’t the time come?”

Dogs are considered to be a man’s best friends but then also if there is a demand for dog meat that is really hard to believe. It is the reality that the dog meat trade continues in many parts of the world despite widespread outrage over the practice.

Dogs that are sold for meat are often strayed or pets stolen and after that, they are kept in cramped cages until they are cooked for their meat.

In South Korea, dog meat consumption is something related to their cultural practice and it is very old. But now it is not considered as very good because more and more citizens are speaking against it.

Now even the President of South Korea has joined the brigade that opposes dog meat and indicated a possible ban on dog consumption.

President Moon Jae-in raised his opposition against it during a weekly meeting saying that the time had come to prudently consider prohibiting dog meat consumption. He had asked this to Prime Minister Kim Boo-Kyum.

This proposal of the President shows a widespread cultural shift against dog meat consumption in the country. Today’s generation considered this practice taboo because more and more people have dogs as pets.

According to Jeon Jin-Kyung who is the head of the Korean Animal Rights, a large number of South Koreans are considering the consumption of dog meat as a matter of animal abuse rather than abuse. Though the popularity is declining still an estimated one million dogs are eaten in the country every year.

Moon Jae-in is a big fan of dogs and his suggestions speak about it. But South Korea has a very complicated law system related to dog meat. In 2018, a ruling said that dog meat is illegal but there are no laws against its consumption.

According to BBC, 84% of South Koreans had never eaten dog meat nor intended to and 59% say that they support a ban. So there is hope for animal lovers that the days of eating dog meat in South Korea could be numbered. We totally agree with the South Korean President as the time has come to put an end to this evil practice.
